The Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of Reunification

Built between 1788 and 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans based on the classic Greek model, the Brandenburg Gate played an important role as it was the entrance to the city. Three years later, Johann Gottfried Schadow built a copper Quadriga on top of the gate, representing the triumph of peace just as the gate does. Between 1961 and 1989, the anti-fascist rampart (former East Germany) was erected here as well as the Berlin Wall, and as a result the Brandenburg Gate was no longer accessible to Berliners. On November 9th 1989, it became the symbol of reunification, when East and West Germans celebrated together the opening of the former East Germany's frontiers.
